Unconventional gas

Natural gas that cannot be produced using the longest-established technologies. Much of it has only recently become viable to produce, due to either technological improvements or, in some places, higher gas prices that make the use of higher-cost production techniques feasible. Examples include Shale gas and Coalbed methane.

Upstream

Term usually used to describe exploration and production activities in the oil and gas industry. It normally also includes piping or shipping the hydrocarbons to a processing plant.

USAC

Tanker market term for US Atlantic coast.

USG

Tanker market term for US Gulf, more properly known as the Gulf of Mexico.

Utilisation factor

A ratio of the maximum demand of a system or part of a system to its rated capacity.
