Energy Consultancy of the Year (Performance Improvement), 2016: Palmer International Partnership LLP

Palmer International Partnership is a leading independent, London-based, engineering consultancy focused on the hydrocarbon industries, both upstream and downstream. The firm offers comprehensive and strategic advice for improved performance and profitability; from concept to operation.

Taking a holistic view, Palmer help clients to identify, develop and implement the most effective projects for their business and achieve the best performance from their facilities.

Its portfolio features the industry-leading Mastering your Asset programme, which aims to empower clients to operate their plants more efficiently and also to develop smart projects to improve asset profitability. The programme enables clients to look at the different elements of a plant to achieve a more effective operation.

A client commissioned Palmer to perform technological and economic due diligence on its planned $7bn, world-scale naphtha cracker project. Palmer’s engineers identified a significant shortfall in energy performance which would seriously undermine the project’s economic viability. Using its extensive experience, together with its proprietary simulation modelling technology, the firm reworked the planned design to deliver an increased EBITDA of $140m per year. The lead bank and investors deemed this sufficient to validate the project’s economic viability.

Another client commissioned Palmer to apply the Mastering your Asset programme to its steam and power system which was consuming the former in substantial and unaccounted quantities. Using its SAPSIM model, together with input from the client team, Palmer reconciled the steam balance and identified areas of loss which will be remedied at the next turnaround. Additionally, the firm identified an attractive project worth an estimated $2m, and delivered an estimated 50% IRR.
